  • Eel Stock has stabilised for over a decade following a steep 30 years decline and the Eel Regulation as anticipated is slowly working.
  • Continue to give primacy to the Eel Regulation with its enabling of the subsidiarity principle and long term thinking.
  • Improve the feedback mechanism between EU-COM and MS so that all negative mortality impacts are addressed.
  • Recovery needs Habitat Restoration so the link to the Green Deal and WFD are an essential part of the holistic strategy.
  • Countering Eel Trafficking remains a priority and the SEG Standard with its full traceability requirement is also key.

Europe tries to save the eel population as numbers reach historic low

At the beginning of winter, Atlantic waves bring a new generation of eels from their spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea to the coast of the Bay of Biscay. Over a billion glass eels arrive there every year. Andrew Kerr is the chairman of the Sustainable Eel Group (SEG) , which works across Europe to help preserve this fascinating species.
