Accelerating the recovery of the European Eel

SEG on Channel 4 ‘Food Unwrapped’

This week Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped programme interviewed SEG as part of an insightful film looking at jellied eel sales in the UK.

SEG took the show’s presenter Kate Quilton on a tour of the Somerset levels to meet members of the River Parrett and Tone Sustainable Elver Fishery – to explain the issues faced by elvers trying to get into the UK’s waterways and rivers and to highlight the importance of using sustainable practices in the eel supply chain.

Food Unwrapped also visited an eel fisherman and a jellied eel factory in London that are not affilliated with SEG, and discovered that jellied eels on sale in UK supermarkets are sourced from New Zealand with no sustainable certification.

The programme can be viewed until the end of August here. The eel films start after 5:30 mins, and 17:50 mins.
