Accelerating the recovery of the European Eel

A good deal for healthy eels | Atlas of the Future

In this article, Atlas of the Future look at the collaborative approach necessary for the accelerated recovery of the European Eel as part of their NatureFutures project.
“As we know, most good things are accomplished not by single heroes, but by diverse stakeholders working together. In this case, it’s the scientific, conservation, and commercial sectors holding hands.”
Sustainable governance requires the careful balancing of social, environmental and economic factors – not forgetting the cultural and political. The European eel, as with many migratory species; crosses borders – both geographic and political; and is deeply embedded in the many ecosystems and societies it passes through.
“SEG and many other stakeholders are taking on the three main challenges for the healthy survival of the European eel population”
The main challenges the eel faces; Illegal Trafficking, Barriers to Migration and Habitat Loss require international collaboration in counter trafficking, rewilding and conservation operations – alongside careful control of the fishing sector through the SEG Standard.
The status of the stock, protection needed and level of protection likewise requires careful regulation. This is done through the Eel Regulation– which is fit for purpose and slowly working.
